The effects of river impoundment on artisanal fishers in the Middle Tocantins River, Brazil

Abstract: Aim The present study investigated the social impacts caused by construction of a large hydropower dam (Lajeado Dam) on artisanal fishers in Middle Tocantins River, evaluating how impoundment affected fishing techniques (locations, transport and gears), operation (income, effort costs), fisher’s well-being. Methods interviewed 30 (Colony Z-04, Porto Nacional, TO) between August October 2018 with application structured questionnaire. Results indicated that is socially important as source income occupation, carried out essentially men low levels formal education. Fishers reported, however, significant changes fishery system after River. main area was maintained, but abandoned some sites. There were equipment, an increase use aluminum boats outboard engines, reduction various gears, replaced gillnets. Almost all (96.6%) declared financial costs increased damming.
